Week ending 13th April 2013 (Vets)

INVITATION DAY

Around 36 Cooroy members journeyed to Bribie Island to be part of a field of 117 including 52 visitors (Cooroy & Tewantin Noosa).   Storeyline Bus Tours again provided an excellent bus service.

Despite 5 minutes of bucketing rain during the round it was an enjoyable and otherwise fine day.  The general concensus seemed to be favorable and that we will be back again in the future.

Grant Smallacombe finished our best with 36 points, a good effort considering he couldn’t comment on the excellent couch fairways because, in his words, he didn’t hit too many of them.  Grant also picked up a NTP on the 16th.   Grant shared a cart with Ron Blount.  Rumor has it that Grant insisted on driving whenever they were near water after the ‘dam incident’ at Cooroy.

Graeme Finn and John Kelly each carded 35 points and together with Garry Sheales on 34 featured in the ball run down.

Apart from the course a noticeable feature was the size of their 2 cart sheds – they must have each been around 100m in length.

HOST DAYS

The draw for the Host Day at Mt Coolum on 15th April 2013 is on the Vets Notice Board in the club house.

We need more nominations for 22nd April 2013 when we host Caloundra at home – so get your name on the nomination sheet as soon as possible.

HANDICAP ANCHOR

With effect from 14th May 2013 GOLF Link will automatically prevent a player’s Golf Australia Handicap from increasing by any more than 5 strokes beyond their best GA Handicap from the previous 12-month rolling period.   The Anchor has been 4 strokes.

The Anchor eliminates the capacity for extreme outward movements of GA Handicaps within short spaces of time.

As a result, a sustained loss of form does not cause a player’s GA Handicap to move too far from a level which is consistent with their underlying ability.

The Anchor also makes the handicap system less susceptible to manipulation.

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

Sometimes you can get a little too attached to things in golf.  John Milligan wasn’t sure he could play last Wednesday because he’d misplaced his favourite driving tee.  Fortunately a kind member donated a similar tee and John was able to play.  Unfortunately John misplaced it in the creek in front of the 5th Tee.

Dave Chapman carded a very good 40 points to win ‘C Grade’ aided by a birdie on the 15th – on in 1 and then sunk a 20 foot putt (actually 10 foot but grew with telling of the story)  – giving him “2 a 5”.

Tom Murphy obviously had his eye in with a NTP on 4th and 6th.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Lovely course. Challenging enough to make it fun, but not too difficult for high handicappers

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
