Week ending 11th May 2013 (Vets)

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

It appears news that our Black Caviar (aka Dave Walder) had broken down was greatly exaggerated.   Is there a need for a steward’s enquiry?

Bolting away from the field with 49 points, Dave was back in the winner’s circle with Bob Brookfield taking out the 4BBB Stableford.

The Runners Up, Bob Noble and Dennis Guion, both 11 handicappers, made a determined effort to chase down the winners carding 2 bogeys, 1 birdie and 15 pars for their 46 points.

I am still looking for players interested in participating in Sunshine Coast District Veteran Golfers Team Challenge to be held on Thursday the 23rd of May at Pelican Waters.  The cost is $35.00 per player, includes competition fee, lunch, and a shared cart.

The nomination sheet is located in our cabinet at Cooroy Golf Club.

WORKING BEE

Kirsty has passed on her thanks to all those Vets who showed up last Tuesday for another successful working bee.   A new roof was put on the half way house, tee markers/blocks painted and lots of areas cleared of debris.

The date for the next Working Bee will be advised shortly.  It won’t be the 4th June 2013 as there is a major Women’s event on that day.

The work will probably involve tree maintenance so as many utilities and trailers as possible will be needed.  Ground staff will carry out most of the pruning and maintenance so no chainsaws are needed.  Kirsty just needs an eager team to help clean up debris behind the loppers.

HOST DAY

We have an away Host Day at Nambour on Monday the 20th May 2013

Our numbers are a little light on at the moment so if you are interested get your name on the nomination sheet as soon as possible – nominations close on 15th May 2013.

2013 QUEENSLAND VETERANS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Quite a few of our members participate in this event each year but it would be difficult for anyone to better Lionel Willett’s record.

Lionel has nominated again this year and is approaching his 30th consecutive year playing in this event – quite an achievement.

VALE

Fred Fisher passed away recently aged 93 years.  Fred was a member of the Vets for many years.

NEW COMMITTEE MEMBER

We now have a nomination for the committee position.  An announcement will be made towards the end of the month as the candidate is currently overseas.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Lovely course. Challenging enough to make it fun, but not too difficult for high handicappers

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
