Week ending 10th August 2013 (Vets)

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

It seems the weather may have been too good on Wednesday, we started with a field of about 80 but unfortunately had about 10 players withdraw for various reasons.

Well done to all winners, and congratulations to John Round who cleaned up the field at Mount Coolum with a very impressive 42 points on Monday.

Working Bee:  Will be held on Tuesday the 13th August – 7.30 am at the green keepers shed for approx 2 hours.

Coming up is our Host Day at Gympie on Monday the 19th August.  Nominations close on the 15th of August. We won’t be supplying a bus, so I suggest we car pool.  Let me know if you require a ride.

Also coming up is the Sunshine Coast District Veterans Championships at Peregian Springs on Monday the 2nd September. The event will be played in A, B, C, and D grades. Details are on the notice board.

VALE COLLIN TAYLOR

Col Taylor (known to many as Rambo) passed away last evening after a short but serious illness.   He was 88 years of age.

Coll was a member of our vets for many years retiring from competitive golf about 3 years ago.

Coll is also remembered as the Honey Man as he kept bees and sold to club members from the back of his trusty Subaru Ute.

Coll and Val (his wife) were personal friends of Les Arthur and his wife and they, along with many of our golf fraternity, will miss him.

HOST DAY at Mt COOLUM on 5th August 2013

25 Cooroy players made the trip to Mt Coolum on a beautiful winter day.  The course was in great shape with fast greens and well grassed fairways.

In his own words John Round had his best round ever to take out C Grade with 42 points and heading the field of around 112 players. Our next best players were Dave Chapman on 34 and Andrew Dick on 33.  John Clements took out a NTP.

The win puts John well in the frame for the Jim Penman Host Day Trophy.  With 7 host days remaining there will be ample opportunity to challenge Ron Blount’s position at the top of the Leader Board although Ron is modestly confident he can hang on.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
