Vets – NEWSLETTER week ending 8th February 2014

Captain’s Corner

Our February John Madill Toyota, Monthly Medal was well supported with 74 players taking part. The unseasonable dry conditions have made scoring easier, and player’s handicaps are probably a bit lower than they normally would be. The run down stopped at 68 and shows that a lot of player’s performed well.

Errol Radley (left) continued his fine form and took out the A-Grade with a nett 63. In B-Grade Terry Harrison played the game of his life and came in with a very impressive nett 59. Congratulations also to C-Grade winner Peter Smith scoring a nett 63.

Our 3 Best golfers for the day were, Denis Guion Gross 77 winning on a count back from Errol Radley 77, and John Butler 80.

Welcome to new members Cliff Bacon, and Andrew Aves.  Andrew, who is just out from the UK was fortunate enough to witness my eagle on the 18th.

The new cards certainly copped a fair amount of criticism; Wayne is well aware of their shortcoming and has stated “they will be replaced with something better”.

This year the Queensland Veterans State Championships are being held at the Mt Coolum Golf Club. This is an ideal opportunity to take place in this event while it is being held on the Sunshine Coast. The competition is being played in 3 grades. A-Grade Up to 12, B-Grade 13-19, C-Grade 20-36.   Details and nomination forms can be found on the Vet’s notice board. I would advise getting in as soon as possible.

WORKING BEE Our next working Bee will be on Monday, 17th February.  Volunteers will be assisting with the coring of the greens.

Slope Rating

As outlined in a recent Newsletter Golf Australia has introduced Slope Ratings as part of the new golf handicap system.

A list of Slope Ratings for golf courses in Queensland is available at https://www.golf.org.au/default.aspx?s=aus-slope-ratings&State=QLD

For example the men’s White Tees at Cooroy have a Slope Rating of 113 which is the rating of an average course.  If men play off the White Tees their handicaps will not change.  The men’s Cooroy Blue Tees, however, have a rating of 118.  Some handicaps will change.  Charts are available in the club house so you can look up your Daily Handicap.  You need to know your exact handicap e.g. 21.2 when looking up the charts.

You can also use a new Golf Link Handicap History feature called “Daily Handicap Calculator” which allows you to calculate your Daily Handicap according to the slope rating of the course/tees you are playing simply by entering the slope rating – see graphic below.   You first go into your handicap history via the Handicap History facility by entering your full Cooroy Golf Club membership number e.g. 4130601356.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
