VETS: Newsletter week ending 23rd July 2016

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

I must say that it is nice to be back amongst familiar faces after my 7 weeks away.  Thank you to Vice–Captain Jim Henderson and the rest of the committee for taking on my duties while I was absent.

I didn’t play any golf while I was away and must admit that I didn’t miss that part of it.  What I did miss was the very friendly and social aspect of our Vets golf that just seems to come naturally at Cooroy.  This is a credit to all of our members.  I would also like to take this opportunity in thanking all of our member sponsors who have donated prizes this year, your generosity goes a long way in being able to provide you all with member benefits.

I have now updated both the Jim Penman Host Day Trophy and the Most Consistent Stableford Competition leader boards.  These are on display on our notice board.

Leading the “Jim Penman Host Day Trophy” is Don Clelland with 348 points from his best 10 games.  Close behind are Jason Egan 347, and Rex Williams 345.

Leading the “Most Consistent Stableford Competition” is Greg Michael with 377 points from his best 10 games.  In 2nd place is Rex Williams 370, and 3rd is John Stewart 358.

You may have overheard some rumblings regarding the Cooroy Golf Club cutting the number of our shotgun starts next year.  I wish to advise that our President Graham Laing and club President Rob Powell are in discussions at the moment in an attempt to come up with a resolution that may suit us better.

MARTY’s HUT

Another great effort by Jimmy Henderson in organising the hamburger and drink stop yesterday ably assisted by cooks Ray Leslie and Jim Turnbull.  Thanks also to our NTP sponsor’s who also supplied the ingredients for the great hamburgers and to Cooroy Golf Club for the drinks:

Richies Bakery/Fox & Hound Espresso –
Cooroy

Cooroy Harvest Fresh – Cooroy
Noosa Outlook Prestige Meat – Tewantin

Thanks also to our sponsors for the day Nick Kostalas and Grant Smallacombe.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Lovely course. Challenging enough to make it fun, but not too difficult for high handicappers

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
