VETS: Newsletter week ending 16th January 2016

A WORD FROM COOROY VETS PRESIDENT, Graham Laing

On behalf your Vet’s Committee I wish to extend to you all a warm welcome to the 2016 Season and hope that you are looking forward to an exciting year of friendly competition and great companionship as this is what makes Veterans Golf so special for us all.

It is your Committee’s intention to continue to provide support to our members in a similar manner to last year, with maybe a few little twists thrown in. Our popular Host Day calendar is again full to the brim, kicking off with Pelican Waters next Monday and we encourage all of you to participate in these events when your are able.

Remember, if you have any suggestions, please have a chat with a Committee member, as we do appreciate your feedback. Cheers and have a great year

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

It was very encouraging to see a field of 88 take part in our 1st programmed event for 2016.  This plus the great participation we had during our Xmas Break Competition has me very excited about the year ahead.

1301_ashe-black_6Congratulations to our John Madill Monthly Medal winners in Brad Jordison, Tony Bernhagen, and Tony Kershaw. The good news for Brad is that they do produce a 5XL shirt, so yours is on the way.

In 2016 our Monthly Medal winners will receive a Cooroy Veterans Golf Club “Golf Towel” plus a “Polo Shirt” that will be embroidered with our logo, your name and details of the event and when it was won. There will be a different colored shirt for each month of the year – January pictured left.  2nd and 3rd prizes will remain the same as last year.

It was an outstanding effort by 19 handicapper Tony Bernhagen to feature in the 3 best gross scores for the day with a 75 off the stick.

For those who were not at the presentation I would like to inform you that my playing partner Con Russell set a new “Guinness World Record” for the most 4 letter words uttered on a golf course.  Most of them I had heard before, but there were a couple that proved that you are never too old to learn.  It is all part of my “EDUCATION” says Con.

For those venturing to Pelican Waters on Monday, PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS AN 8.00am SHOTGUN START.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Lovely course. Challenging enough to make it fun, but not too difficult for high handicappers

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
