Vets – NEWSLETTER week ending 13th December 2014

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

This being my last Captain’s Corner for the year, I would like to pass on that from my point of view, it has been a very successful year.  We have a great mix of members who not only enjoy their golf, but also provide a very enjoyable social atmosphere.  I would like to thank all of the members who have assisted me during the past year.

The sponsorship’s and donations by our members have been outstanding and a great help.  There are many other members who have put up their hand up to help out and this goes right down to the people who jumped up to assist our caterer’s bring in the food and equipment on Wednesday.

The shortened course for Wednesday’s game certainly made a big difference in the time it took to complete our rounds.   It was great that Club General Manager, Wayne Patston, could join us.   Wayne and I spend a lot of time discussing Vet’s business, so it was great to spend some social time with him out on the course.  The added benefit of Wayne joining us was that we put together 11 birdies in our round to finish with a very nice 50? points.  Our other partners in Adam Madill representing our sponsor John Madill Toyota, and Tony Kershaw also played very well.

Of course as we were not all Vets’ members, our winning team with a very good 51? was the “Simpson Team” – Greg Flanagan, Chris Simpson, John Woodward and Terry Lyons (left – not looking at all like they enjoyed it!).

The dozen ball prize for guessing how many balls in the box was won by Bill Galvin.  Bill’s estimation of 230 was only one out with 231 balls being in the box.

Our Sponsors for the day were the “Bush Boy’s” –  Bill Galvin, Glen Johnstone, Peter Reilly, Kerry Martin, Phil Mason, Jon Sendall, Paddy Knapp, Gary Sheales, John Quodling, Bruce Wilshire, Jim Prendergast, Jim Gregg, John Kelly, John McNamara & Tom Murphy.

I must mention their generosity again, as I made a bit of a mess of the presentation when I didn’t have anything for their representative John McNamara to hand to our winners.   I would also like you to know that their sponsorship not only covered the Winners and Runners-Up, but also provided the prizes for the 3 Long Drives, and the NTP’s on the 6th, 7th, & 10th holes.

You may have noticed some thinning out of trees and other improvements to the course.  The new greens committee had 12 volunteers out on the course earlier this week and their efforts are truly appreciated.

It was great to see our Life Member, Jim Penman (left with Vets Captain, Grant) make the effort and attend.  Jim is a great role model and he continues to provide a lot of useful information to myself and others.

You may have noticed me and other Committee members wearing an assortment of different design and coloured shirts.   For the record the colour of my shirt was FUSCHIA” not pink.    We hope to gather some feedback throughout next year and end up choosing a comfortable, easy to care for, and nice coloured shirt for 2016.

AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR

By any standard 2014 has been an exceptional year but of course this didn’t happen by chance or good luck.

To all members, past and present, and sponsors a sincere thank you for your support and efforts throughout the year in making the Vets more than just about golf.

On a personal note I would like to thank members of our committee, Kevin (Harpo – left modelling a mop head and one of the new shirt colour options), Grant, Jimmy, Andrew, Bruce, Graham, David and Mike for their support and hard work during the year.  A lot of unnoticed work goes on behind the scenes to make our competitions and events innovative, successful and enjoyable – a great effort.  A special mention for ‘new boys’, Bruce Cowan and David Lyons, both of whom stepped up to the tee without hesitation to assist with committee work.

One final thought – personally I would prefer to think of the colour of Grant’s shirt as ‘watermelon’ in case it gets the nod as our new Vets shirt colour.

On behalf of your committee – Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.

Good golfing and see you in 2015.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.
