VETS – Newsletter week ending 11th April 2015

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

We were blessed with fine weather this week for our Single Stableford event.

Our sponsors for the day were Mike Miklenda, Rod Roemermann and Kevin CrundallWe thank them for their generous support and a special thanks to Kevin Crundall for supplying all of the NTP and Run Down balls.

Some of you may have noticed that we have placed a tribute to our only Life Member Jim Penman on our notice board.  You can see a copy of the tribute under the Life Member section on the Veterans’ page of the website.   The Committee thought that it was time that we recognized Jim’s great effort for his involvement in the Cooroy Veteran Golf Club over such a long period.   For those that may not know, “Jim has been back in hospital, we wish him well, and we look forward to his reappearance back on the golf course.

Sponsorship is a very important part of any club and we would like to welcome aboard Yandina Restaurant Thai Tong (3 Stevens Street) as our latest veterans’ golf sponsor.

Thai Tong will be providing a $25.00 voucher for the NTP –  2nd shot on the 1st Hole for the remaining twelve shotgun starts we hold this year.

As a regular customer of Thai Tong I recommend their food as the best you will find outside of Thailand.

Manager Tanju not only provides great food, but also offers top service and the restaurant has a very good selection of beers and wines to choose from that are not overpriced.

Please support businesses that support us, and when you do attend Thai Tong make sure you mention that you are from the Cooroy Veterans’ Golf Club.

WHAT’s COMING UP

Next Wednesday, 15th April 2015, is a Stableford sponsored by ‘The Bush Boys’ (there are a lot of them – we will name them on the day) who generously sponsor 3 events throughout the year.

We travel south to Bribie Island on Monday 13th April 2015 – a long day but should be a good one.

We host Caloundra on the 20th April 2015 – the nomination sheet is available in the club house.  Don’t forget by playing in our Host Day program you can win points towards our Jim Penman Host Day Trophy.  There are now 10 prizes on offer.  The Leader Board for this trophy is posted on the Vets Notice Board.

Our next FREE Sausage Sizzle is on 22nd April 2015 which is a 4 Man Ambrose sponsored by the Cooroy RSL Sub Branch – this is our ANZAC event.   Get your team organised and set now as it can be frustrating when we are left with orphan players (group less than 4) unable to participate in the competition of the day.  We will do all we can to reorganise teams but late withdrawals, particularly without notice, make it very difficult.

Our 2015 Pairs Match Play kicks off on the 29th April 2015 with a 4BBB Stableford and qualifying round.

INTERESTING GOLF RESEARCH FINDING

One of the interesting findings from research conducted for Golf Australia is that 2 out of 3 golfers in Australia are non club golfers playing socially.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
