Captains Corner

Welcome everyone who is reading what is the 1stCaptain’s Corner” for 2014, and best of luck for the New Year. The start of the year looks very promising with 80 players turning out for Wednesday’s game, and we also had 30 players attending the Host Day at Pelican Waters on Monday.

Apart from our bad scores, I believe everyone enjoyed the hospitality offered by Pelican Waters.  Len Highland was our only player to play to his handicap or better, Len came in with a very good score of 38 points.

Our next Host Day is at home on the 10th of February. We have Pelican Waters visiting us, so it would be great to see a large number of our player’s turn up to play.

Congratulations to our Wednesday Monthly Medal winners, A-Grade Ossie Osborne, B-Grade Bob Brookfield, and C-Grade Dave Chapman. And thank you to John Madill Toyota for their continued sponsorship of this event.

This year we have 15 stroke rounds for the year.  Kevin Tonkin (aka Nivek Niknot) has kindly donated prizes to cover the best 3 gross scores in these 15 competitions. The prizes are a sleeve of 3 golf balls for the best gross, 2 balls for 2nd and 1 ball for 3rd.  This week’s winners were Ossie Osborne (80), Dennis Guion (82 c/b), Bob Noble (82) c/b. Thank you Kevin for your generosity, I think it is a great idea to have a prize that rewards our best golfers.

It was quite amazing that this weeks’ Captains Choice‘ (NTP 2nd shot on the 3rd) never went off, especially as the Tee was in a generous position, and the flag was right up at the front of the green.  Anyway as I sponsor this event we gave out the prize of 3 balls to three random card draws. The 3 extra people hopefully went home a bit happier than they may have.

A Good Young Person Keen to Work

It is great to see good young people who are keen to work.

Bill Hesse has a grandson who fits this bill and started his apprenticeship with a builder.  Unfortunately the builder is out of work so Bill’s grandson is looking for a carpenter or builder willing to take him on so he can finish his apprenticeship.  He is willing to start as a labourer if the apprenticeship position is not available.

If you know or hear anything Bill would love to hear from you.

Host Day Visit to Pelican Waters

Slick greens and lots of sand (well it is close to the beach after all) made it a tough day at Pelican Waters judging from our scores.  Our 6 best after Len Highland on 38 were:.

David Lyons 34, Bill Edwards 31, Rod Roemermann 31, Col Easton 31, John Stewart 30, Mike Miklenda 30.

Slope System

Golf Australia is progressively making changes to the golf handicap system.

The following notes provided by Club Handicapper, Assunta Easton, will help understanding the changes about to come into operation.

The full Slope System will come into effect on 23 January 2014.  You will have a Golf Australia handicap as you do now, but when you play, you will use your daily handicap which may change depending on which course you are playing (at Cooroy as well as at other clubs).  Your GA handicaps will be in the black folder as usual.  If you are registered on the computer, it will come up with your Daily Handicap which you will write on your score card.  If you are playing a partnered event such as a four-ball or Ambrose, you will need to look up the charts which will be available, to see what your daily handicap is.

The men’s White Tees have a slope rating of 113 which is the rating of an average course.  If men play off the White Tees their handicaps will not change.  The men’s Blue Tees, however, have a rating of 118.  Some handicaps will change.  You need to know your exact handicap e.g. 20.6 when looking up the charts.

The other difference is that, for the purpose of handicapping, your scores are entered as Stableford points (or Par).  Therefore when you play a stroke game, you are asked to write down your Stableford points as well as your gross, even though these will not be used for the actual competition.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.
