Sports fans – look no further than Cooroy

Article appearing in the Cooroy Rag.

For a small town Cooroy really does pack a punch when it comes to local sports.

Nearly every interest and age group is catered for with sporting clubs ranging from tennis, bowls and golf, to gymnastics, swimming,  and cricket.

There’s badminton, touch footy, soccer, even  a Show Jumping & Equestrian club.

Wayne Patston is Manager of one of the town’s biggest sporting attractions, the 18 hole Cooroy Golf Course, known in the region as the ‘friendly’ golf club.

“We have over 420 members, with people aged anywhere between 12 and 95 years of age,” Mr Patston said.

“The club’s relaxed and welcoming atmosphere ensures we always get strong support from locals and the broader region.

“Our Club Patron,  95 year old, Jimmy Dunston, keeps everyone at Cooroy golf club young at heart and we all love his enthusiasm.”

The decision to expand the course to 18 holes around 10 years ago was critical to the Club’s success according to House Director Terri Cairns (right in picture).

“Long time local resident Wayne Brogden spearheaded this big expansion and it has made a big difference,” Terri Cairns said.

“The 18 hole course means we can compete with other courses in the region and puts us in contention to attract some big district events and have events like the Mens Open Day or Womens Open Day and other great events.”

Whilst events are important, Club members believe the friendly and relaxed atmosphere at Cooroy Golf Club is what sets it apart from other Clubs.

“There are no problems, no hassels. If you want to join, we can join you up,” Mr Patston said.

“All visitors are welcome, members will always say hello. We encourage new golfers.

“We don’t try to be regimental… we have got time sheets, but I always say if you can’t make it right on time just rock up when you can.”

Wythes Real Estate Representative Samantha Hargrave said Cooroy’s positive community vibe, including its great sporting facilities, made it a very popular place to live.

“More and more people are discovering the great lifestyle and sense of community on offer in Cooroy,” Ms Hargrave said.

“The wide range of sporting clubs and facilities that exist in Cooroy make it particularly attractive for young families – the place just comes alive with sport on weekends, and local teams and clubs receive strong support.

“These are some of the little extras that people get when they move here and its part of the reason Cooroy is in such demand.

“Fortunately with great new developments like Erindale Park on Lake Macdonald Drive, young families, first home buyers or anyone looking for great value, can find an affordable place to call home in one of the Hinterland’s most cherished communities.”

For more information about Erindale Park visit the website www.erindalepark.com.au and sign up for regular updates via our E-newsletter or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507.

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
