COOROY JUNIORS: Results of School Holiday Events

This is an update on the events and results from our juniors over the school holidays.

Queensland Junior Amateur at Nudgee Golf Club – Kauri Course (25-28 June 2024)

We had three juniors represent Cooroy Golf Club at this event. Jaxon Smith, Merrin Bartholomaeus, and Coco Moore. To give you an idea of how difficult it was to even be able to play in this event, the cut-off point for the boys was a GA of 2.9 and the cut-off for the girls was a GA of 18.0.

The course is very challenging and requires strategic course management otherwise you will find yourself in a bit of trouble. There are so many challenging bunkers to navigate and the greens are elevated and multi-tiered.

Over the first two days, our players had the following scores.
Jaxon Smith – 79 and 79 (+14)
Merrin Bartholomaeus – 83 and 83 (+20)
Coco Moore – 86 and 83 (+23)

The cut was then made of the top 36 boys and the top 36 girls. Congratulations to Merrin and Coco who made the cut for the top 36 girls. The cut line for the boys was +11, so Jaxon missed the cut by 3 shots and went on to play in the Titleist Stableford Plate for the last two days.

Merrin finished Tied 26th for the girls and Coco finished 34th. This was such a great accomplishment for our juniors considering the level of competition and the difficulty of the course. Jaxon finished Tied 15th for the boys in the Titleist Stableford Plate.

TeeMates 2 Day Winter Classic at Keperra Country Golf Club (1-2 July 2024)

Merrin Bartholomaeus and Jaxon Smith braved the rain, wind, and cold to play in the TeeMates Winter Classic at Keperra Country Golf Club in the second week of the school holidays. Jaxon struggled with the slow, bumpy greens and finished top third of the field of the boys. Merrin adjusted better to the conditions coming Tied 8th out of the girls.

Brisbane Junior Amateur at Indooroopilly Golf Club (4-5 July 2024)

Jaxon Smith competed in the 2024 Brisbane Junior Championships which was hosted by Indooroopilly Club this year. This was the first time playing at Indooroopilly and they played a different course each day. Indooroopilly was a tough course in challenging conditions. Jaxon came top third out of the field in this event.

Headland Junior Classic at Headland Golf Club (Sunday, 14 July 2024)

This local event saw four of our juniors competing. Merrin Bartholomaeus, Coco Moore, Jaxon Smith, and Riley Carroll. This was Riley’s first SBG Junior event and we really hope he enjoyed the experience.

Two of our juniors took away a win for the day:

Jaxon Smith – Overall Boys Gross Winner with 73 (+2) and qualified for IGA Graeme Miller Junior Masters
Merrin Bartholomaeus – Division 1 Girls Gross Runner Up with 80 (+8)

We look forward to seeing some more fantastic golf from our juniors over the coming months!

Kind regards,
Penny Smith

  • Best value for money golf course on the Sunshine Coast. A really fun course layout, forces you to use multiple clubs off tees And have good course management. The grains are in great condition and are really receptive

  • Fantastic golf course! Really well setup with signage, sand buckets, and ball cleaners on most tees. This course is designed for playing 1-18 consecutively rather than stopping midway. A ‘grip it and rip it’ mindset will lead to disappointment as there are many hidden hazards (yes I speak from experience!). Some of the fairways are deceptively narrow or have huge swathes of flanking rough hard to see from a distance. Lots of variety! Long par 5s to short par 3s and everything in between. Take care when walking between tees as its easy for first timers to get disoriented. At just $40 I felt it was great value and would definitely go back.

  • Lovely course. Challenging enough to make it fun, but not too difficult for high handicappers

  • Great place to play golf. Course is a good challenge for all HC’s. Very picturesque, but if you walk it the last couple of holes uphill might get you. Very limited parking. Worth a look.
