CAPTAIN’s CORNER
Fine weather saw a good sized field turn out to play on Wednesday. The dry weather certainly helped the scoring as the run down stopped at 39 points.
Ken Morgan played his last game with us today as he is moving south to Beachmere. Ken hopes to return for our Xmas competition day, where no doubt he will again show off one of his bright colored outfits. Best of luck to Ken and Lynn with their move.
Geoff Kerr must have been a tree felling contractor in his previous life, as the tree’s certainly got even with him during his round. Two memorable occasions were on the 1st when Geoff hit his ball into a tree; the ball came back towards him at high speed and hit his cart. The other occasion on the 17th where his shot went over the back of the green, hit a palm tree and came back 30 m straight towards him, and ended up in the bunker. Geoff hit many other trees during his round, but none of those were quite as spectacular.
Working Bee: The next working bee will be held on Tuesday the 3rd of September, 7.30 am at the green keepers shed for approx 2hrs. of light duties, followed by coffee in the Club.
Host Day: Our next host day is at Horton Park on the 9th of September. Take this opportunity to play in what may be our last game there. It is a 7.30am shotgun start & the nomination sheet is on the Vets pinup board at the Club.
Next Wednesday the 4th of September is our Monthly Medal, it will be an 8.00am shotgun start.
On the following Wednesday the 11th of September we have a 4 Man Ambrose event, this will also be an 8.00am shotgun start. We are making it a special day to mark the start of our Summer season, there will be quite a few additional events and prizes to be won, we will have a longest drive in all grades, and you can expect the tee positions to be in different locations from the normal. Please organize your teams and see if we can have an excellent attendance for what should be a fun day. The sheet will be available next week.
Cooroy Veterans Golf Shirts: I will be doing another order soon for our green logo golf shirts, anybody who requires a shirt, see me. The cost is $40 payable on receipt of the shirt. The shirts will have your name embroidered on them, making it easy to identify you by other players.
RESULTS FROM HOST DAY on 26th August 2013
Another great Sunshine Coast day for golf when 35 vets from our southern neighbours, Headland, joined us for a host day at Cooroy on Monday. Honours were fairly even except in the raffle where our visitors walked away with everything – not a drop left for the locals.
The fairways were fast and furious and so were the scores.
Jim Penman shot a 77 off the stick (considerably less than his age) for 40 points to win A Grade. It seems Jim takes great delight in proving the old adage that “age doesn’t matter unless you are wine or cheese.”
Mike Smith would have been feeling pretty chuffed, and confident, walking into the club house with a 46 only to find that Warren Hay had shot the lights out with an exceptional 48 to take out C Grade. Jimmy Henderson also had a good day returning a very good 44 in C Grade (3rd best score of the day) but had to be satisfied with a ball in the Run Down. Tough game this golf!
Cooroy players featuring in the Run Down were Bill Edwards 41, Allan Emery 41, John Kelly 39, John Round 39. Per Mounsey 38, Dave Chapman 38, Col Easton 38.
Geoff Kerr might have hit a few trees but he also hit the 6th green taking out the NTP as did Bruce Wilshire on the 7th.
RESULTS FROM 28th August 2013
Event: Stableford
Field: 78
Prize Donor: Cooroy Vets
Plenty of fairway run, fast greens and good scores continued from Monday.
Grant Smallacombe, our Captain, was tossing up on Wednesday morning whether to play because he had already played 3 days in a row but went out anyway scoring 45 points – the 3 days were obviously just a warm up!
Brad Lavender made a rather unflattering comment about the chip shot to the green by one of his playing partners thinking he had dropped it well short but Brad hadn’t noticed the temporary green 100m back up the hill from the 11th green – or read the notices on the white board! Brad was quite pleased with what he thought was his own well placed layup until he noticed he had hit it well past the temporary green. Brad spent his enforced layoff for a knee replacement reading lots of books on golf and says he especially enjoyed one called “How to Play Like Tiger” – although listening to him talk about it we were not convinced it was the stories about golf he enjoyed most.
