VETS – Week ending 22nd August 2015

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

by Grant Smallacombe

Cooroy Golf Club are looking for a volunteer to man the drinks cart for their Saturday Competition Day.  This position may suit someone who wishes to stay involved but can’t play.   Please have a chat with myself or Club Manager Wayne Patston if you are at all interested.

A busy week this week, with a visit to our neighbors Gympie on Tuesday and then our Stroke round on Wednesday.  Our players enjoyed the Gympie hospitality but struggled to dominate when it came to scoring.   Our best players were Peter Piggott, Rex Williams, and Mike Miklenda who all finished with 35 points.  Mike Miklenda was the only player to feature in the major prizes when he took out 3rd place in C-Grade.

On Wednesday some members asked me why we were playing a stroke event.  We play a total of 14 Stroke events (12 are Monthly Medal) for the year, 19 Stableford events, 4 Four Man Ambrose, 4 Two Man Ambrose, 3 4BBB Stableford, 1 V-Par, 1 Irish 4 Ball Stableford, 1 American Foursome, and 1 Canadian 2 Stroke.  We also play a total of 17 Host Day Stableford events, plus 3 invitation Stableford events.   We try and ensure there is a good mix of games.   Some may not suit everyone but we try and keep the majority of our members happy.

A couple of our players had no problem at all with the Stroke Event.  Bruce Wilshire is back in fine form and carded a 64 nett to take out the A-Grade.   Alex Kologaras has been playing well lately and continued this form when he won in B-Grade with 64 nett.   Col Easton was the best in C-Grade with a 67 nett.

If you struggled in today’s Stroke round spare a thought for Dennis Beckhaus who obviously played a very good shot (within 300mm) on the 13th to win the NTP.   His score was going along OK until the 18th where he finished with a 26, yes you are reading this correct, it was a 26.   I am not sure where all of these shots went to but am told that the 18th green won’t require top dressing this year.

Beware John Cairns is back in town, I spoke to John at the Club on Tuesday and we are hoping to see him back out on the course soon.

One last thought, we all like positive feedback, but sometimes negative feedback can result in positive outcomes.

NEW GOLF SHIRTS

The new golf shirts are expected to be ready within 2 weeks.  We need to pay the supplier when we take delivery.

If you haven’t paid yet please see Rod or Grant next week.  If you have paid you will receive an email receipt.

Hopefully we will have the Cooroy Vets contingent playing in the District Vets Carnival on 31st August 2015 decked out in our new shirts and highly visible, both on the course and on the winner’s podium –  the ‘Green Hornets’

VETRussell ConS ON THE ROAD or RAIL or SEA

Con Russell has just returned from a trip to Alaska with his better half, Di.

It appears that Con (picture) couldn’t resist the temptation of a bit of golf in what is clearly a magnificent location.

Di says Con had no problem getting the drive away but putting out proved a bit difficult.

I’m sure Con will be happy to tell you about the trip if you give him half a chance – ask him about all the pine trees.
