Vets – NEWSLETTER week ending 31st May 2014

NEXT WEEK

Plenty of golf available next week:

MONDAY we host Nambour and Peregian Springs at Cooroy – 8:00am shot gun start As there is a large field it will assist if you arrive and register early.  Pre-game light refreshments and coffee will be available.   As we have a number of our committee away at present a big thanks in advance to members who volunteered to assist on Monday.

WEDNESDAY is our June Monthly Medal – 8:00am shot gun start.  Remember you must be present in the club house to collect if you win a draw in our raffle on shot gun start days.

INVITATION VISIT TO WOODFORD on 16th June 2014

Nominations close on 2nd June 2014 so if you want to participate get your name on the list quickly – the list is on Vets notice board.

Travel will be by car pooling so organise it amongst yourself.  If you are having trouble organising a lift speak to Jimmy Henderson.

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

As Grant is overseas we have a mystery ghost writer filling in.

What looked like being another very good field gradually whittled away with around 10 late withdrawals.  Nevertheless a field of 66, including regular visitor, Ian Powell, enjoyed a magnificent Queensland autumn day and some good golf.

Terry Lyons and Peter Piggott posted an excellent 59¼ to take out the 2 Man AmbroseTerry modestly admitted his driving supported by Peter’s putting got them home.  Terry had a very good day all round also winning 2 NTP’s and a bottle of wine in the raffle to celebrate.

Dennis Guion(left) and Paul O’Hare finished with 62½ to take Runner Up with Dennis also picking up the Lian Scott Personal Travel Manager prize for NTP on the 10th.

For those who recently ordered Cooroy Veterans’ Golf Club shirts the order has been placed and the shirts should be available shortly.

Unfortunately not everything was rosy on Wednesday.  Despite numerous requests and notices posted on the course there were blatant occurrences of members carelessly driving carts where they shouldn’t be driven, particularly roped off wet areas, damaging the course.  Remember it is your course so be considerate and look after it otherwise stern action will be taken.

MEMBERSHIP

Welcome aboard to new member, Laurie Staples.  Laurie joined the Vets immediately he turned 55, which happened to be Wednesday and started membership on a winning note with a place in the run down with Ambrose partner Ray Leslie.

PAIRS MATCH PLAY – NORMAN GARTH BAKER SHIELD

The finalists for the Pairs Match Play have been decided with Les Arthur and Dave Chapman playing Doug Allisone and Kim Bannikoff.   The final is to be played by 25th June 2014.

Should be a good one – local boys.

WORKING BEE

The working bee scheduled for Tuesday, 3rd June 2014 has been cancelled as it clashes with the Women’s Open Day at Cooroy.

DISTRICT TEAM CHALLENGE at PELICAN WATERS

The day started bright and clear with a team meeting between Don, Les, Dave, Rod, Tony, Terry, Ron and Andrew with the back-up of Bob and Derek (surnames withheld to protect the innocent) – discussions were of tactics and how to sledge the opposition.

Some went to the practice bunkers to hone our skills (less used at Cooroy) and others to scavenge practice balls to hit a few shots.

Despite the weather being in our favour and high team spirits our results lived up to last year – last again with Tim Can Bay taking top honour (if they can do it so could we!!).

However on a brighter note Derek Clayton (left), our reserve, won best score of all the reserve players with 37 points.

Next year the team will have to be made up of more ‘inform’ players so we can move up the table – but then that’s why it’s called a ‘challenge’!
