MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS

Following on from the decision taken at the recent Special General Meeting the Management Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Greg Michael (left in photo) as President and Peter Piggott (right in photo) as Vice President.

MEET OUR MANAGEMENT TEAM

Continuing our popular series of ‘getting to know the Cooroy Golf Club staff’ we now include some Committee Members, starting with our new President, Dr Greg Michael. In Greg's own words.

My wife Chris (who is also an active member of Cooroy Golf Club) and I have been residents of the Sunshine Coast for 8 years but have family ties to the coast that go back 40 years and to the Gympie region that go back over 100 years. We are both retired and live on a small acreage at Eumundi. We have a son, a daughter and 3 grandchildren who live on the Sunshine Coast and a son who lives in Brisbane.

I am originally South Australian but left there when I was 9 and after a 6-year stint in Port Moresby ended up in Brisbane. Having now lived in Brisbane, Rockhampton and the Sunshine Coast for a total of 48 years I think I can be considered to be an honorary Queenslander.

I have a PhD in physics from University of Queensland and spent the first 11 years of my working life as a medical physicist at Royal Brisbane Hospital. There I spent most of my time doing radiation protection and quality assurance testing of medical imaging equipment. I then moved to the university sector and spent 25 years teaching physics at Central Queensland University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of the Sunshine Coast. I ran the Masters in Medical Physics program at QUT for many years.

My past sporting activities included lots of soccer and a bit of hockey, cricket and squash. I didn’t take up golf until my mid 20’s and played once a week for a few years until family commitments and a career change intervened. Over 30 years later I took it up again when I joined Cooroy Golf Club 4 years ago. I am in my 3rd year as a Vets Committee member and my 2nd as Cooroy Vets Host-Day Captain. I play regularly every Wednesday and Saturday and currently play off a handicap of 13.

My other interests include family, gardening, reading, classic cars (I restored a 1966 Mk1 Mini Coopers S, owned an MGB GT for many years and if I ever have a spare half-a-million dollars will buy an Aston Martin DB4) and electronics (among other things I have built my own stereo speakers and amplifier and a guitar amplifier for my son).

I ended up in the position of President somewhat reluctantly and by an unconventional route. However, now there, I am willing to commit to the position for at least a couple of years (subject, of course, to re-election at future AGMs). I do not have a personal agenda for the Club except, like all members, I want to continue playing golf on a great course, enjoy the social interaction that comes with the game and see continuing improvement in the course, clubhouse and facilities within the constraints of long-term financial security.

TRIVIA NIGHT

Mark Saturday, 18th May in your diary for our first Trivia Night for 2019 commencing at 6:00 pm.

Rumor has it the questions will be easier than last year. Start planning and get your table organized. There will be a limit of 10 tables with six people per table.

The cost is $25.00 per head payable when you book your table at the bar. The cost includes lasagne, salad and garlic bread. Book early to secure a table. Bring your own nibbles.

2019 COOROY MEN'S OPEN

Mark your diary for the Cooroy Men's Open on Sunday, 23rd June 2019.

Online registration will open around mid May so start thinking about getting a playing group together. You will be able to nominate a group of up to four players in one online registration process.

FROM THE SHED

From The Shed March
PUTTING with FLAG POLE IN HOLE

While the practice of putting with the pole in the hole is preferred by many golfers the same cannot be said of greens staff, including our own green staff. A course superintendent from a prominent golf course on the sunshine coast, visited recently by vets, had this to say about the practice on social media – “someone please tell me how we are supposed to keep our cup edges clean and sharp when members are now allowed to ferret the ball out of the hole with the flag pole still in. Dumbest rule ever!!!!

We are seeing physical damage around the cups on our greens. So we are asking members to gently (and vertically) remove the flag from the hole, before retrieving the ball. We only have four greens staff and don’t want to ask them to change pin placements more than they currently do.

REMOVAL of BRANCHES

Thanks to Tony Bernhagen who arranged for a 20m reach “cherry picker” to take out branches and widen the tunnel from the tee on the 18th. Photo shows Tony overseeing his mate Nigel, high above, removing overhanging branches. This will only cost the club a few cartons of beer. Hopefully we can do similar on the second fairway next.

A big thank you to volunteers who moved branches off the fairway on Monday 25th March – Tony, Doug Pearce, Ian Mulhall and Dave Lyons, and to those on Tuesday 26th March, who moved material to the burn site and to the firewood pile respectively – Doug Pearce (again), James Henderson, Don Clelland, Greg Michael and Ron Blount as well as Todd, Paul, Brendan and Alex (Greens staff).

ROCK GARDEN - 4th Hole

Some plants have been put into the garden, but they look very lonely. Todd has a couple more to put in, but we need members to bring in more to make it look really good. No more agapanthus, but ornamental grasses, succulents and any other relatively drought tolerant small shrubs are needed. If you can help, please contact Todd, Greens Director, Dave Lyons or leave message on volunteer notice board.

The offer is open until 30th June 2019 - conditions apply. You can assist by promoting membership of The Club.

There is still time to make the most of the free benefit period.

WOMEN'S GOLF

We have two teams playing Pennants at the moment, one in Division 2 and one in Division 3, neither travelling too well! The Division 2 team hosted the weekday North pennants last Monday which went very smoothly, many thanks to our Greens Staff for a very well presented course.

Nett Pennant is also underway with Cooroy making a good representation at the North Coast Zone Open days.

Queensland Country Championships are being held at Bundaberg and Bargara next month. We have around 12 Cooroy women registered to play in this 3 day event - watch for results.

We wish Assunta Easton a speedy recovery (she’s in hospital) but doing okay.

Well we made it to the end of the rail trail (pushy ride). 175km over 4 days head winds, broken bolts on bikes, rain and wrong turns but still fun!
