GEMLIFE UPDATE

The appeal hearing is expected to conclude in late February. It may be 4-5 months before a decision is handed down.

REVIEW OF CONSTITUTION

As Cooroy Golf Club is incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (the Act), the organisation must operate according to a set of rules, also known as a constitution.

The rules of the club have undergone many revisions since its establishment in 1935. We need to update the rules to recognise changes in laws, adopt modern best practices and make the language clearer.

Through financial support from Golf Australia, the club has engaged with local governance consultants CPR Group to develop a new constitution for Cooroy Golf Club. CPR Group is Australia’s leading sports governance, planning and community development provider and has rewritten constitutions for Maleny, Maroochy River, Headland, Mount Coolum golf clubs and many other clubs.

The process for this project is:
  • CPR Group review meeting with Management Committee (completed 6/2/2024).
  • Draft version of the constitution for management committee review (by 20/2/2024).
  • Member consultation period. Draft version of the constitution and covering notes distributed to members to review. Members will be invited to provide feedback (2-3 weeks).
  • Notice of general meeting to adopt the new constitution (at least 14 days before the meeting).
  • Hold a general meeting to adopt the new constitution.
  • If adopted at the general meeting, the constitution will be lodged with the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) for registration.
  • Turnaround time from lodgement with OFT to registration is between 4 and 8 weeks.
  • Once registered with OFT, the new constitution will take effect.
CPR has also been engaged to rewrite the club's By-Laws.

MEMBERSHIP

Our membership currently sits at ~420. We offer a range of membership types and payment options to suit different needs at an affordable price. 62% are Ordinary members and 14% Pay-as-you-Play members.

70 % of our members reside in Cooroy postcode 4563 and postcodes that have common boundaries with postcode 4563.

81% of our members fall into the 50 years and over demographic. This is down from 90% in 2019. Membership for most golf clubs falls into a similar demographic but, we skew more heavily to the older demographic with 39% in the over 70 brackets. We now have 27 junior members and 7 cadet members.

The split between male and female members is broadly in line with the Australian golf club average at 80/20.

Nearly 25% of our members are in the first year of membership. The first 2 years of membership are recognised as the most vulnerable and crucial for retaining members for the long term. This is the period when they are most likely to drop out if they do not feel a sense of belonging and connection with the club and its activities. Ease of social integration and feeling comfortable the club is the right fit for them are important in retaining members beyond those early years. So, if you come across a new member make them feel welcome and give them a reason to stay with us for the long term.

Research continues to show the main reasons people join a golf club are related to the key motivating factors for playing golf; fun and enjoyment followed by the social nature of the sport.

THE VETS

After a change in the Vet’s Constitution late last year, we are now able to include female members to participate in our home and away Host Day competitions. It is pleasing to see that a number of the ladies have already joined the vets and are now participating in these games. We believe that having the ladies on board will add a breath of fresh air to these days and we hope that they will get the enjoyment out of being part of the SCDVGA that most of us have enjoyed for years.

Anybody wishing to join the Cooroy Veterans' Golf Club must also be a member of the Cooroy Golf Club. You will also need to be 55 years of age or older.
