Week ending 27th August 2022

Hi reader,

WEDNESDAY

We are holding up the trend of fields of over 100 - Wednesday 103.

The Woolway Team of Mark, Mike Rumford, Steve Jackson and Greg Topping handle the fine but rather chilly day to score 52.87 and take the top spot in the 4 Man Ambrose.

The Big Geoff Pembroke Team of Geoff, Little Geoff Currie, Phil Botting and Shane LeGale scored 54.25 to take second place. The Williams Team of Tom, Scott Bennett, Peter Jeucken and Derek Clayton came in third with 55.25

The new golf management system keeps track of the pace of play and time each group takes to play a round. The time is calculated from the playing group tee time to the time the first player in the group scans their score card. In future a report showing the time taken to play the competition for each playing group will be published on the white board.

VOLUNTEERS

A huge thanks to our volunteers - it's been a big couple of weeks:
  • The working bee last Tuesday made great progress with renovating the 4th hole gardens at the crossing to the 5th. There will be a follow up working bee next Tuesday, 30th August 2022. We will see the rewards for this work as the arrival of spring brings everything to life and we kick off the next phase of the Tee Identity Project to improve course aesthetics and playability. The aim is to create a unique, memorable identity for each hole.
  • The replacement bridge on the 6th is in place. The next steps will see cart path extensions added. A big thanks to Grant Smallacombe, Bob Read and their crew. Please do not use it until it is formally opened.
  • We had a great response to the request for assistance with course machinery maintenance. Tony Foster has put his hand up - thanks Tony.

HOST DAY PROGRAM

It has been a busy August with two host days just completed (Caloundra and Maroochy River) along with a District Event at Peregian.

Caloundra (Friday 12th August)
Early rain reduced the field to 114, including 23 from Cooroy. We got the second and third best scores of the day, with Rick Lenske beaten in a countback to take second in C grade (40 Stableford points), closely followed by Garry Stephens who came third with 38. Both good efforts considering we played of the blue markers and no preferred lie. Four others got balls in the run down; Dave Lyons (34), Peter Jeucken (33) Mat McQueen and Andrew Carson (32). Their course was in very good condition and we were well looked after by the locals.

Maroochy River (Monday 22nd August)
We sent 23 players to Maroochy in a field of 120. While we didn’t feature in the major prizes, we certainly did in the run-down which went to a generous 30 points. Our best three scores were Neville Kunst (35), Robert Knott and Wayne Carty (34). Others to get a ball in the run-down were Andre Smit, Andrew Dick, Andrew Aves, the ever reliable James Henderson, Anthony Jones, Mike Kent, Geoff Cowan, Scott Bennett and Lance Horn. Greg Flanagan had a pretty ordinary score but he did hit one good shot, taking out the NTP on the 12th hole.

Some reckon the greens were too fast, while others said they really enjoyed the challenge. Our thanks to Ray Butlin their Captain for accommodating several changes that we made over the last week. It didn’t affect his golf as he had the best score of the day (39).

District Championship (
Peregian Monday 22nd August)
A field of 119 teed off at 8:30 and comprised six ladies and 113 gents, eight of whom were from Cooroy. Players come from all the 11 clubs on the Sunshine Coast from Tin Can Bay to Pelican Waters.

Congratulations big time to Peter Jeucken who got the second best net score in A grade (70) and earned himself $75. He got a special trophy as well, and his picture taken with sponsors to go in the local papers. Terry Wilson got a ball in the run down with 32 points while the rest of us enjoyed the restaurant lunch and had high hopes in the many raffles. Mat McQueen had purple tickets which were regularly called up, but was so unlucky missing out on the big cash (up to $500) a couple of times – so, so close. However Bruce Otto was all smiles winning a Peregian Golf Club shirt. One player was 20 cm short of the hole on the 12th , tantalisingly close to taking home a Toyota sponsored by John Madill Noosa.

Nomination sheets are in the clubhouse for Nambour visiting Cooroy on September 5, and Cooroy visiting Gympie on Tuesday 20th September. Note closing times and no need to book carts at Gympie. Just read and fill out the nomination sheet properly.

Also when we visit other clubs and they ask for handicap, they are after your GA handicap, not what you play off at Cooroy on Wednesdays or host days, which is meaningless. It only takes a few seconds to find out your GA handicap. Go to one of the two computers that we scan cards through, and press Handicap. Saves a committee member chasing it up for you.

It is busy times ahead. We have three host days in September, in October and in November, Tin Can Bay to reschedule hopefully.
