Hi reader,

Welcome aboard to Peter Simson. Pete picked up a ball in the rundown in his first game with the Vets.

HOST DAY PROGRAM

Visit to Headland

Our trip to Headland was called off very early on Monday, but some decided to continue on down and visit the course.

They didn’t have as much rain as up here, so their captain started a competition which included 60 players, 13 from Cooroy. Several stopped after nine holes because of drizzle, however the heavens opened up later and those who finished the round deserved a medal.

One of those was Joe Daniels who came second in Division 2 and collected goodies to the value of $35 at the Pro-shop.

Unfortunately the programs of both Headland and Cooroy are very busy and we are unable to visit them again this year; but Headland come to us in November.

We host Caloundra on Monday 11th April. The nomination sheet is available in the clubhouse and closes next Wednesday. Tee allocations will be circulated once the draw is made. It is a shotgun start.

DISTRICT EVENTS

In our last newsletter we called for nominations of six groups of two players for a District Event at Mt Coolum on Friday, 8th of April.

Those playing are:
  • Graham Laing & Brian Clemow
  • Peter Piggott & Greg Michael
  • Gary Menyweather & Darryl Ayers
  • Peter Jeucken & Scott Bennett
  • Tony Foster & Doug Pearce
  • Peter Crosby & Greg Flanagan
Play good golf and enjoy.

WEDNESDAY

Kelvin Brittain continued his red hot form to take the A Grade monthly medal with 67 from Terry Lyons 70 and Tony Hayes 70.

Kelvin also took out the Best Gross Award with 76 from Studley Martin 78, Richard Gibson 80 and Bronco Price 80.

The good scores continued in all grades with Vets President, Graham Laing, firing an excellent 67 to win B Grade from Terry Wilson 70 and Ross Maloney 70.

The best score of the day came from C Grade with Alex Kologaras carding 66 to win the monthly medal from Dave Chapman 69 and Anthony Jones 69.

Thanks to sponsors, The Sultans of Swing, aka Ron Blount and Derek Clayton for their generous donation of golf balls.

Last week we mentioned Slow play and there was a slight improvement, as our Captain's group, teeing off at 7.26 am, finished in 4 hours. For some reason after this some of the later groups took 5 hours to complete their rounds.

We will be timing groups over the next few weeks to identify where the problem lies. Our aim is for everyone to enjoy their game.

Please read below a few tips on improving pace of play.
  • Cart golfers are always quick to blame walkers for slow play. Too often we see the passenger sit in the cart until the driver has taken his shot and then they drive 5 to 10 meters to the passenger’s ball where he begins his pre-shot routine.
  • Cart users should be aware of the extra time taken in sharing a cart and look for ways of speeding up play, e.g. move ahead of walkers to identify ball positions. Position the cart for easy access from the green.
  • The trick is to keep up with the people ahead. Not ahead of the people behind (they may be slow players).
  • Walk quickly between shots.
  • Be ready to play when it’s your turn.
  • Do not address the ball for too long; be ready to hit your shot as soon as you are set up.
  • Do not take more than one practice swing.
  • Do not leave your bag in front of the green; leave it on the exit position for the next tee.
  • Hole out short putts unless you will be standing on another player’s line.
It is recommended that the lowest handicap player determine the order of play from the tee to maintain the pace of play. The honour system should not apply if you are losing ground - play ready golf.
  • While searching for a ball you can always call the following group through.
  • Do not mark your card on the green; cards should be marked at the tee during player’s preparation to hit.
  • Leave the green as soon as the last putt is holed, or if you are falling behind move to the next tee as soon as you have holed out.
