Hi reader,

WEDNESDAY

Terry Lyons brought along his A game and teaming with a steady Ian Mulhall, the pair put together a top flight performance to take the 2 Man Ambrose with 58.75.

Thanks to Paul Williams for sponsoring the event.

The leader-board shifted throughout the day with contenders rising and falling away. Second place eventually went to Peter Crosby and Geoff Cowan 60.25 with Jack Ruig and Mark Woolway 61.75 taking third place.

The rundown went to 65.

Con Russell is back in the news after a very quiet run (unusual for Con) with a birdie on the 14th.

The field of 86 was down slightly as we had four Vets playing today in the Crawford Cup seeded match-play draw - result unknown!

MEMBERSHIP

Rick Lenske joined his brother Jim Lenske as a new member of the Vets - welcome aboard.

UPDATE TO MEMBERS

Honorary Life Membership of Cooroy Vets
Life membership is an honour bestowed on an individual member of Cooroy Veterans’ Golf Club whose continuous, meritorious, loyal and outstanding service and contribution has provided benefits to the Vets and its golf constituency over an extended period.

We recognise Honorary Life Membership as our highest and most prestigious award acknowledging exceptional service and contribution.

We are pleased to advise that the Vets Management Committee has unanimously accepted a recommendation to award Life Membership to Jim Henderson. The committee will present the nomination to a Special General Meeting of Vets members on Wednesday, 16th June 2021 to ratify the nomination and awarding of life membership. A notice of meeting will be issued shortly.

Division of Handicaps into Grades
Typically handicaps are divided into grades as follows:

A Grade 0 – 14
B Grade 15 – 21
C Grade 22 – 40.

We aim for an even distribution of player numbers across grades and monitor the numbers playing in each grade from week to week. If the difference becomes significant we make appropriate adjustments but keep the number of times we change grade settings to a minimum. Grades are noted on the whiteboard for each competition and on the score card boxes on the bench in front of the Vets noticeboard.

Financials
We are in a sound financial position with around $20,000 in the bank.

Several factors contribute to our financial position:
  • Sustained growth in Wednesday rounds played since resumption of play in June 2020. In the period from June 2020 to April this year we played 1,000 more rounds than in the corresponding period. Wednesday fields are at an all time high.
  • Increase in competition fee to $15 from $13 on resumption of play in June 2020.
  • Forced abandonment of 2020 Xmas lunch, Marty's Hut and Sausage Sizzle days resulting in lower catering costs but see comment below about Marty's Hut.
  • Forced cancellation of several 2020 trophy events so Award and Trophy Event costs are down.
  • Resumption of our host day program after cancellation of most events in 2020. Unfortunately, we lose major sponsor, smallPRINT Australia Pty Ltd, which sponsored the full costs of golf balls for all home host days for many years. The business has been sold. We aim to break even on our annual host day program so this adds cost unless we find a new sponsor. Host Days are an important part of what we are able to offer our members. Well run events and attractive prize levels are important to our standing in the District and ensure we attract good numbers from other clubs to our host days. And, host days provide a great opportunity to showcase our course.
  • Member competition sponsorship is running at over $6,000 annually, an all time high. This is cash only and doesn't include 'in kind' sponsorship e.g. golf balls etc. Amazing support from our members.
This increase in playing activity flows through to our finances and also benefits Cooroy Golf Club. In the 12 months ended April we paid Cooroy Golf Club $54,349, around 90% of our total expenses, for the purchase of goods and services e.g. we pay CGC an $8.00 green fee per member each competition and purchase wine for our lucky draw, golf balls and drinks for Marty's Hut. Typically, competition prizes are credited to the members club account and spent within the club.

Last year the Vets donated $6,500 to CGC to assist with the acquisition of a secondhand Toro Workman Utility Vehicle. Unfortunately, repairs to the vehicle proved more extensive than originally thought so it did not proceed. Todd has been looking for alternatives but disruptions to the supply chain caused by COVID-19 have made this very difficult as local second hand equipment is in high demand. Todd continues to look for alternatives.

Invariably we do better than break even in running our program of events allowing us to put aside funds surplus to operational needs which can be available for projects or funding initiatives with Cooroy Golf Club.

We are currently looking at how we might best deploy surplus funds. The guiding principle for funding initiatives with Cooroy Golf Club is that projects funded by The Vets must demonstrate an outcome that significantly raises the standard of the course or facilities and which is aligned with the Cooroy Golf Club Strategic Plan and Course Master Plan. The Vets do not fund work necessary to provide a safe, well maintained and presented course and facilities as that is the responsibility of Cooroy Golf Club.

JIMMY'S FAMOUS BURGER and BEER - Marty's Hut

HOST DAY PROGRAM

Our next Jimmy's Famous Burger and Beer at Marty's Hut is on Wednesday, 26th May 2021.

COVID-19 forced the cancellation of most of these free events and our annual Xmas lunch in 2020 so, we plan to hold regular Marty's Hut days through to Xmas this year. These days also allow us to support our NTP sponsors, all of whom maintained their support for us through difficult times last year.
A great day at Tin Can Bay (picture) with Cooroy finishing in third place in the District Team Challenge, our best ever result - a great effort team.

And, Andrew Carson took first place in the team reserves competition - another great result.
2021 05 17 - District Championship TCB
A field of 99 enjoyed a great day at Mt Coolum with some good individual performances by Cooroy. However, Mt Coolum put together a better team performance to take both home and away rounds giving them victory in the inaugural year of the 'Co-Co Cup'. Paul Williams had the second best score of the day, 38 points, to win B Grade. Joe Daniels scored runner up in C Grade with 36 points and Lance Horn claimed third place in C Grade with 35. Jack Timm, Peter Piggott, Michael Todd, Ron Ballantyne and Andrew Dick each collected a ball in the rundown.

We host Nambour on Monday, 24th May with an 8:00am shotgun start, registration by 7:30am. The entry fee is $15.00. Sandwiches, pies and sausage rolls will be available.

Nominations are still open for the trip to Maryborough on 1st June for round 2 of the MaryRoy Shield. We are looking to take a large Cooroy contingent as Maryborough will be seeking revenge after losing the first round. There will be a free bus providing we get sufficient numbers.
