Hi reader,

MEMBERSHIP

It was great to see Bill Hesse back with us and out on the course playing again.

Jimmy Henderson heads off to Ireland next week for a month but no need to panic. Jim left very detailed instructions with nominated people about how things are to be done while he is away. I suspect they will be very glad to see him return.

WEDNESDAY

Sunshine all day again although the morning started a bit chilly...a great time of year for golf. The course did, however, play tough with only one score above 38 points.

A big thank you to our long time member sponsors "The Bush Boys", they know who they are. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Thanks also to John Stewart and Andy Stewart for taking up sponsorship of Round 2 of the Vets championship on 11th September 2019. John and Andy are grappling with a suitable name almost certain to have a Scottish flavour.

Highlight of the day: 41 points by Con Russell and didn't he let everyone know about it, especially Grant telling him how proud his mother would have been that he had beaten the Vets Captain. According to Con he chipped and putted like Tiger, regularly sinking 20 footers.

There were, however, other players on the course with a good field of 77.

Peter Kennedy returned to take A Grade with 38 from Phil Mason with 36. Peter Buchbach took out 3rd place with 35 on countback. Phil Mason also took out the NTP on the 12th with his ball defying the laws of physics. The ball ran straight at the hole and was in for all money but somehow finished millimeters directly behind the cup.

Despite the handicap of playing with Con our Captain, Grant Smallacombe, maintained his composure to take B Grade with 38 from Dale (Rick) Rickard with 36 on countback from Derek Wood.

Con Russell blew away the opposition to take C Grade from 'Dangerous' Don Clelland with 37 and Dennis Beckhaus with 35 c/b.

And, Kerry Martin finally won something, a bottle of wine in the Lucky Draw!

NEXT WEDNESDAY and 10 SHOT MAXIMUM RULE

Next week is the JUNE Monthly Medal with a very important variation.

The Vets Committee has decided to adopt the 10 Shot Maximum Rule introduced as part of the last round of changes to the Rules of Golf.

The need to hole out on every hole in stroke play can have at least two downsides: (1) it often leads to a slow pace of play, and (2) it may discourage golfers who feel they no longer have a realistic chance to compete or to make a good score for the round once they get a very high score on one or two holes.

Maximum Score is an alternative form of play that addresses both concerns, by allowing a player to “pick up” when he or she scores at or above the maximum and by capping the player’s score for any hole at the maximum.

Most people recognise that anything that can be done to speed the game up is a positive thing. As Veteran Golfers anything we can do to encourage our players to extend their golfing days should be done. We are also aware we have members who dislike Stroke and are reluctant to play on these days for the above reason.

Grant has drawn up a Note explaining the change which will be handed to each group before they head out to play next week.

MARYBOROUGH

A reminder that the Maryborough visit to Cooroy on Monday, June 3rd is an 8:30 am shotgun start, although if you arrive early hot coffee/tea and light refreshments will be available.

There are still plenty of seats available on the FREE bus to Maryborough on Tuesday, 11th June. Don't delay nominating. If we can't fill most of the seats this year we will reconsider a free bus for next year and go to car pooling instead.

Female members of Cooroy Vets are welcome.

2019 COOROY MEN'S OPEN

From The Shed - April/May 2019

The last two months have been overwhelming with the amount of rain received. Course Superintendent Todd advises the total this year has reached 716mm. Our greens have handled the wet conditions so far, but we will need to keep monitoring on a daily basis. Fairways not so good and it is desirable to keep carts off the course until it …
