Issue 8 - UPDATE on World Handicap System

Cooroy Golf Club logo
Hi reader,
The response to the previous newsletter suggests a little more information will help understanding the new World Handicap System (WHS).

The R&A and the United States Golf Association have worked with major handicapping authorities including Golf Australia to develop a single worldwide Handicap System for the game.

Most of the current system will stay the same except for the following changes:
  • Change of formulae for working out GA Handicap and Daily Handicap. More details on this can be found on posters in the Club House or on the Golf Australia website.
  • Adjustment to Daily Handicap formula when scratch Rating is different to par (this affects the men at Cooroy where the Scratch Rating is 67 (White) and 68 (Blue) and the par is 70.)
  • Daily rating system (PCC or Playing Conditions Calculation). This will be displayed on your handicap record as an adjustment value e.g. +3 or -1 with +3 denoting the hardest conditions and -1 denoting the easiest.
  • Maximum GA handicaps will now be 54 for both men and women. However it is up to the clubs to decide the maximum they will use for their competitions. At Cooroy, the men (including Vets) are imposing a 40 handicap limit for their competitions and the women are staying at 45. These limits can be changed as required by your golf committees.
New concepts are:
  • Soft cap of 3 strokes. This will reduce the rate by which your handicap can increase in any 12 month period.
  • Bonus reduction for exceptional nett score. If your score shows that you played from 7 to 9.9 strokes better than your handicap, you will receive an additional handicap reduction of 1 stroke to your GA handicap. If your score is at least 10 strokes below your handicap you will receive an additional reduction of 2 strokes to your GA handicap.
You do not need to know or remember the changes to formulae or how it is done, as GolfLink will do this automatically. If you wish to know more details check the posters in the Club House or look it up on the Golf Australia website.

Our main changes here at Cooroy are:
  • Maximum Daily Handicaps for men are now 40 instead of 36 (subject to change if required).
  • GA Handicaps will be higher than they are now.
  • Men will generally be playing with Daily Handicaps below those they are playing off now so be prepared to lose a few shots.
Women will see very little difference in their Daily Handicaps as their Scratch Rating (70) is the same as the Par (70).
