Week ending 11th January 2020

Hi reader,
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the bushfires, and the firefighters, emergency services and services personnel working tirelessly to protect our communities.

VETS FINANCES

Despite unrelenting wet weather early on we finished calendar year 2019 with a satisfactory result leaving us with an adjusted cash balance of ~$11,500. At the end of January we will assess funds surplus to operating needs with a view to considering a project initiative with Cooroy Golf Club. We need to maintain a cash buffer of around $5,000 for operational needs.

Income 2019 $66,352 (2018 $60,434)
Expenses 2019 $61,188 (2018 $56,140)
Profit 2019 $5,164 (2018 $4,294)

We played a total of 4,126 rounds in 2019 compared to 4,047 in 2018. Host Day round numbers were higher in 2019 with an average field of 66 compared to 64 in 2018. Wednesday rounds held steady for an average field of 73 compared to 72 in 2018, a good result given the run of wet weather early in the year.

We are pleased to advise that all external sponsors will continue in 2020 due, in no small part to your support, so please continue that support. Our member prize donor program is also looking strong for 2020. Member cash prize donations totaled $5,455.00 in 2019.

We donated $868.90 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia as a result of our Prostate Cancer Fundraising day at the end 2019.

We paid $7,526.50 to Cooroy Golf Club in December 2019 for goods and services. The figure for the 12 months to December 2019 is $53,389.70 compared to $48,569.00 for 2018 – a 9.9% increase.

HIGHLIGHTS from WEDNESDAY

After a short break we are back on the course again for 2020 with our January Monthly Medal. A very good field of 93 to kick off the year, including 4 visitors from Woodford.

The fairways are a little dry from the lack of rain but, the greens are in excellent condition. The new 17th fairway is looking good and with a bit of rain could be back in play earlier than expected.

Highlights of the day: A hot day and hot contest in each grade. Phil Mason hit form early to take A Grade with 62 from Peter Kennedy 63 and Peter Buchbach 66 on countback.

John Butler took first spot in B Grade with 65 from Trevor Kinneally 69 on countback from Peter Palmer 69.

A sizzling 61 by John Kelly saw him take C Grade from Larry McErvale 63 and Brad Lavender 64. As far as John is concerned age only matters if it's wine or cheese!

Peter Kennedy shot 71off the stick to take the Kevin Tonkin Best Gross from Peter Buchbach and Grathan Leatherbarrow both on 76.

Bruce Otto shot an Eagle on the 17th and collected 6 balls.

MEMBERSHIP

Welcome to five new members: Kelvin Brittain, James Bissett, Hans Herrle, Kent Griffith and Rex Gillard, a very good start to the year.

Don't panic, Kelvin will still serve us well behind the bar on Wednesday. He will be playing host days mostly.

Peter O'Connor has rejoined after a break.

INJURY LIST

Dave Chapman has been seriously ill for the past three months. Fortunately the operation, for the removal of a badly infected hip replacement, was a success but there have been hitches along the way with recovery slow. Dave is presently in Eden Rehabilitation Hospital, Cooroy, but hopes to be home soon. Then there will be more weeks of physiotherapy and rest to come. We wish Dave a speedy recovery and return to golf.

Unfortunately Len Highland is not travelling too well. We wish him a speedy recovery also.

HOST DAY VISIT TO PELICAN WATERS

If you are nominated for Pelican Waters please ensure your Vets Annual Subs Fee ($10) is paid before the event. Nominations for this event are closed.

If you want to know how the Pelican Waters course is playing ask Ian Mulhall for a briefing. Ian got his dates mixed up and turned up at Pelican earlier this week and wondered why there were no green shirts. Pelican were hosting another club but welcomed Ian to join them for a game. In truth Ian might have been trying to slip in a bit of practice for our visit next Monday.

Peter Piggott, Volunteer Co-ordinator, spoke briefly about the 'Adopt a Hole' initiative announced in the recent Member Communication newsletter.

Four teams have taken up the challenge so far. Now they each need to come up with a team name!

Jim Penman Single Matchplay Championship

Our experience with a knock out event such as Single Matchplay is that it is difficult to move through the draw without forfeit of a match or matches. This is not fair on competitors ready to play nor does it reflect well on the outcome.

The Single Matchplay Championship will continue to be played under conditions designed to encourage participants to commit to the event until knocked out.
  1. Prizes accumulate as a player progresses through the knockout rounds. There is an incentive to play each knockout round.
  2. If a player forfeits at any stage of the knock out rounds, then they forego ALL prizes won in previous round/s. There is a disincentive to forfeit.

There will, of course, be exceptional circumstances which require special consideration. In these circumstances, the Vets Captain has the authority to make a ruling and final decision.

Here are the key dates so members can plan well ahead:

Qualifying round: 10th June 2020
Round 1 – complete by 1st July 2020
Round 2 – complete by 22nd July 2020
