VISITING VETERAN GOLFERS

Winter is a popular time for visiting southern veteran golfers enjoying our sunshine and golf, although early Wednesday morning they might have thought they were back home.

We average over 50 visitors a year with many being regulars each year.   We were fortunate to have 6 visitors on Wednesday.

The common feedback is they enjoy the camaraderie and the friendliness at Cooroy, thanks in no small part to our members and golf club staff.  It’s a great opportunity to catch up with old friends (metaphorically speaking of course) and what’s happening in other parts of the Veteran Golfer world.

One of our visitors was Trevor Pridham from Naracoorte, SA who actually returned the best score in C-Grade with Nett 65 but was unable stay and left early.   Grant offered to take his contact details or if not  leave something in the way of a prize behind the bar if he was successful but Trevor declined both offers saying he enjoyed the day and was just pleased that he played well.

CAPTAIN’s CORNER (Grant Smallacombe)

The 36 players who played at Mount Coolum on Monday were not only treated to perfect weather, but also a course that was presented in top condition.  The competition was run very professionally, and quite a few of our players returned good scores.  The outstanding score coming from Rod Harper who finished with 43 points winning Division 3.

In case you are wondering how you are going in our Jim Penman Host Day Trophy the leader board will be on display on our notice board.  The very consistent Errol Radley is holding a slight lead at this stage, but with 2 home and 4 away games to go, any of a number of people are still in the running.  Remember prizes go to the top 10 place getter’s and you must have played in at least 4 home and 5 away games for the year.

On Wednesday our John Madill Monthly Medal was played in fresh conditions due to a very cold westerly wind.  It obviously suited Greg Michael who took out the B-Grade medal with an impressive 61 points.  Russ Rylance was our best golfer on the day, and won the “K. Tonkin” best gross with 79 off the stick.

We have had a great response to our Shirt Orders with a total of 90 shirts to be ordered.  The order has been placed and we should have them soon.  We will keep you advised.

Coming up soon will be a competition within a competition.  On Wednesday the 23rd of September which is a normal Stableford Competition (8.00am shotgun start), we will also play our “International All Stars vs. the “Aussies” challenge.  Because of the numbers, we will have 3 teams competing, The International All Stars will be captained by Jim Henderson, The Australian Attack will be captained by myself, and The True Blue Aussies will be captained by David Lyons.  The 10 best scores from each team will be added together.  The team with the most points will have bragging rights.  The 3 captains will be taking this game seriously as they have a side bet on the outcome.  There will be a prize for each teams “player of the day” plus a small prize for each successful team member.
