A lot of things are happening at the club. Here is an update.

VOLUNTEERS

You may have noticed the magnificent efforts of our club volunteers and some of you may have even witnessed them working firsthand whilst enjoying your game of golf. Don’t underestimate their contribution and value to the Club.

We want them to know that the majority of the Club members appreciate the time and effort they give to make this a better place for all of us to enjoy.

In recognition, the Club is organising a Volunteer Day to be held on Friday, the 27th of September, so mark your diary. The event will be a 4-ball Ambrose and include a Party Hole at the 7th Green and food and special events at Marty’s Hut.

Volunteers, sponsors, and suppliers will be involved in what should be a great day.

Golf Australia recently became aware of our volunteer program and was sufficiently impressed to initiate engagement between their Head of Workforce Engagement, and Warren, Volunteer Coordinator, Graham Laing, and Greens Director, Andrew Dick to understand the program and how it supports club operations, course maintenance and improvement activities.
KEG ROOM CONDENSER

A new Keg Room Condenser was recently fitted below the bar for $9,627.95. The old condenser was subject to regular costly breakdowns, was not efficient, and had a limited remaining lifespan. The work was completed by Cellar Master Australia and hung under the building for better serviceability.

FIRE SAFETY EQUIPMENT

The periodic inspection of our Fire Safety Equipment revealed several defective items. These have now been rectified with the new equipment installed by Ignition Fire for $1,974.50.

GUTTER CLEANING

The gutters on the clubhouse and surrounding buildings have been cleaned by Just Gutters for $715.00. The work was long overdue, and we now have this set up for regular inspection and maintenance through the MEX system.

PURCHASE of MACHINERY

Acquisition of a new John Deere 4066R Tractor with a 4-in-one grab bucket for $71,180.37 incl. GST has been approved. The acquisition will be funded by an upfront payment of $35,591.00 with the balance financed through an interest-free loan with John Deere Financial under a standard commercial loan agreement (chattel mortgage) repayable over 2 years.

Finalisation of loan documentation is delayed pending the election of a new committee.

PRESSURE WASHER

The club recently purchased a Full Bore 3200PSI pressure washer for $518.00.

As part of the Course Aesthetics and Playability Program work has begun to clean and repaint various structures around the course and clubhouse. The sandstone tee sign mounts have been cleaned and resealed by volunteers.

7th BRIDGE REPLACEMENT

An inspection last year assessed that the bridge structure remained sound but should be inspected again this year. A recent inspection revealed deterioration to the extent that replacement is warranted sooner rather than later.

The old bridge has been replaced for $6,100 with a new steel beam and timber deck bridge that sits on top of the old one and is wide enough for golf carts and walkers only. Thanks to volunteers and Warren, the new bridge was installed and opened to traffic in a matter of hours. The old bridge will be removed as soon as practical.

SPARE BRIDGE

The spare bridge you see in front of the ladies' 16th Tee is being saved and will be used in one of two possible locations, depending on the GemLife decision. If GemLife doesn’t get approval by the court then it will most likely end up on the LH side of the 15th allowing better and safer traffic movement on the 7th and 15th holes.

If GemLife does get approval the bridge will most likely become a temporary bridge whilst the 3rd hole bridge is being constructed by GemLife. It will then most likely be installed to replace the creek crossing bridge at the 5th Tee.

CONSTITUTION

The Constitution review/rewrite has been stalled due to a few members condemning the process as a 'Power Grab' without even seeing the draft copy.

CPR Group has been engaged to do the re-write for $3,500 + GST, however, Golf Australia underwrote most of the cost through their Stronger Clubs' Initiatives and Funding program. The cost to the club is $550.
WATER BORE

It may seem that the last thing we need at the moment is more water.

Considerations about drilling a bore with the hope of finding water have been put on hold, but not forgotten.

WASH-DOWN SOAKAGE SUMP

You will have noticed some activity on the right-hand side of the 16th fairway. A drainage sump has now been installed to take the runoff water from the machinery washdown area in the Greenkeepers compound.

UPGRADE to GREENKEEPERS ELECTRICAL

Due to safety issues and the many changes made over the years, it has been necessary to completely upgrade electrical wiring and systems in the Green Keepers compound. Jim Bissett completed the work for $3,627.00.

REPLACE SOLAR SYSTEM on MACHINERY SHED

The machinery shed solar system has been replaced by Ausola Pty Ltd for $4,844.00 after STC rebates. Work on the solar system replacement could not proceed until the completion of the electrical work but is now complete. We will now see a reduction in power costs. Warren can monitor the performance of the system from his mobile phone.

CLUBHOUSE SOLAR SYSTEM

There are 120 solar panels on the roof of the clubhouse that require investigation as the system is not working. Unfortunately, we are not getting any benefit from this system until repairs can be done.

POKER MACHINE ENTITLEMENTS

The club sold five poker machine entitlements to the Rockhampton Leagues Club for $7,500. The process is being handled by the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation and should be completed soon so the money can be released to the club.
SECURITY - LAPTOP STOLEN, STOLEN MINUTES, and FILES DISAPPEAR

Yes, unfortunately, these things occurred several months ago. A laptop was stolen from Warren’s new office and had to be replaced at a cost to the club of $1,330.00.

Files disappeared from Wayne’s computer and meeting minutes were stolen from the back office. Security and access to the back office have been tightened up to prevent this in the future.

Due to a recent break-in attempt in the machinery compound, security cameras have been installed which we hope will deter any repeat offenses. The clubhouse also has security cameras which were installed some time ago.

RECOVERY of LEGAL FEES GEMLIFE

A huge amount of time and effort went into finalising the Myall Street Agreement between GemLife and the Club. The club engaged legal advice to make sure our interests were protected. This was extremely important as none of us are lawyers and we needed to be certain that we had everything covered. There was a lot of negotiating between our legal team and the GemLife legal team.

An agreement with GemLife had them cover our legal costs which amounted to $51,216.00 which has all been recovered.

OPERATIONS MANAGER POSITION

After quite some time spent advertising the position and interviewing several potential replacements, Wayne Patston has decided to return to the place he loves as Operations Manager. Now refreshed Wayne is as keen as ever and this is seen as a great outcome for the Club.
CART PATHS

We plan to extend concrete cart paths on the 4th hole and around the 11th tee with the timing of the work aligned with cash flow from June membership renewals.

FAIRWAY MOUNDING

We plan to strategically place mounding on several fairways similar to that on the left-hand side of the fairway to Hole 1 to address bare patches and better direct water flow during rain periods.

ELECTRONIC TIMESHEETS AND ROSTERS

Taking advantage of the latest technology the Club will shortly switch from paper-based timesheets for staff to electronic timesheets and rosters for greater flexibility, efficiency, compliance, and ease of communication with employees. Staff will have access to electronic timesheets and rosters on their mobile phone.

Also, effective from the week commencing 1st July 2024 we will move to a more traditional Monday to Sunday working week with the regular staff payday on a Tuesday, or if Tuesday is a holiday the next business day that is not a public holiday.

CLUB AUDIT 2023-2024

The Club has appointed SPS Audit as auditors for the financial year 2023 to 2024.

Our previous provider retired from the audit because of a change to their client mix.

COMMUNICATIONS

I trust that our members enjoy reading this news update. You may question why this type of update doesn’t come out more often. There are 2 reasons for this, time and effort required to produce it, and the other sad reason is that anytime news goes out to the members, we are bombarded with complaints from a small minority airing their grievances.
